The DOS NDIS drivers for connecting to Netware servers are usually referred to as just VLMs.SAd A @T)SAd A @TrThe first step is to bring the computer up in DOS mode. It doesn't matter if you hit F8 on the keyboard or if you simply boot to a floppy. The usage of memory management is really necessary, as the network drivers take up so little room that it shouldn't harm the overall performance. However the usage of memory management is encouraged if you using a floppy with enough room leftover for the files. The VLMs and card files are already on the hard drive if the system was originally setup from an image in c:\vlms. Half of the time the machine was reformatted and not setup correctly, making a VLM boot disk a necessity.S=APdddA @A @ 305742281A8rd 3T)SAd A @TThe second step is to begin loading the individual modules that will be needed to connect the system to the network. The first of the is the Link Support Layer. The command in simply LSL.SLAPdddAd A @A @ 3057422823T)SAd A @T:The next step is the tricky one. This is to load your network card driver. All of the Alpha Networks machines use 3Com 3C905B cards or close enough. In the case of an Alpha Networks machine your command would be 3c90x, and this would load 3c90x.com, the driver for your specific card. If your ghosting an emachine system it likely has a BayNetworks NetGear card that we installed in-house afterwards. The command for this card is ngrpci, and it will load ngrpci.com, the driver for the NetGear card. The MiCu machines are much more entertaining. The MiCu machines consistently came from the factory with different network cards. The most common for the older machines is a generic card with a Digital chip (DEC)which uses dc21x4.com, sometimes you will run into one with the card built on to it. These are made by Intel, and they normally work with and e100b compatible driver. In which case you will use e100bodi.com Don't be surprised if you find a NetGear or something else.SLAPdddAd A @A @ 3057422833T)SAd A @T.Now that we have the socket layer established and the card driver loaded we need to load the protocol. Since we are using a Netware 4.x server we are going to use the IPX protocol. Simply type ipxodi. As soon as this loads you will have a machine that is broadcasting it's existence. For things such as DOS video games like Red Neck Rampage and Warcraft this is sufficient, however we are actually trying to log into a server so we will have to load a client.SLAPdddAd A @A @ 3057422843T)SAd A @T/The DOS mode client for Netware is a collection of modules know as VLMs. VLM stands for Virtual Loadable Module in case your curious. Simply type VLM and this will load up the VLMs and connect you to the nearest server. If it doesn't tell you that your connected to a server, for reasons such as say, the network cable not plugged in you don't have to start from step one, simply type vlm/u, and it will unload the VLMs. Plug your cable in etc. and retype vlm.SLAPdddAd A @A @ 3057422853T)SAd A @THYou are now connected to the Netware server, you must now change to the login drive. Depending on how your disk was setup with batch files and such the login drive is usually F:. Most of the time such care wasn't put into making the disk in which case it's usually the first unassigned drive letter. When you change to this drive type login, this will prompt you for your username, put that in, then password. The username and password will be supplied by your supervisor. If no supervisor is available, or they don't know what the password is, Val may help you if you ask nicely.S=APdddA @A @ 305742286A8Hd A8 A8 H3T3S(Ad A A @TGo to K:, change to the images directory. Type ghost. The ghost program will come up, choose Local 4Disk 4From Image. Select the image for the machine your on from the list. The name of the file is usually pretty descriptive, however the MiCu machines can be quite confusing since they use much inconsistent hardware. I have recently tried naming them by the network card driver you originally used, but that doesn't necessarily work every time.S=APdddA @A @ 305742287A8 A8d A8ef WebdingsA8kl WebdingsA#8lTimes New Roman3TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TSome pointers. When you are creating a boot floppy it's easy to run out of room. Try not to copy unnecessary files on to the disk at 1.44 megs space is pretty limited. Copy only the card drivers you need to function correctly. If you using a copy of one of the disk I created, it's going to be full of a lot of junk drivers for cards your never going to see. Either clean it up if you need extra utilities on your disk, or better yet make your own updated disk from the drivers you can download from the Novell site. Anything you need cleared up about the network drivers can be easily accessed at http://support.novell.com. If you are responsible for updating an image or creating a new one, it's always a good idea to add the vlms to the hard drive before you ghost it to the network. This makes it a lot easier if you ever need to restore the image. I'm not writing a paper on how to create an image. After restoring a few workstations it should be fairly obvious how to create one. Just remember to make the original as clean as possible.S=APdddA @A @ 305742288A8 A8d A#8Times New Roman3TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TSummarySuAPdddATimes New RomanAd A A @A @ 2353304313 TRSGATimes New RomanAd A A @TBoot to DOS.
